Dav Pilkey’s “Dog Man” series have been captivating kids worldwide for almost 20 years. Now, his imaginative stories come to life in TheaterWorksUSA’ production of DOG MAN: THE MUSICAL at the Studebaker Theater in downtown Chicago through December 1.
This hilarious, heartfelt family adventure tells the story of best buds George and Harold who have been creating comics for years. Now that they’re in 5th grade, they figure it’s time to write a musical based on their favorite character, Dog Man, the crime-biting sensation who is part dog, part man, and ALL HERO!!
With the head of a dog and the body of a policeman, he loves to fight crime. Can he save the city from Flippy the cyborg fish and his army of Beasty Buildings? Can he catch Petey, the world’s most evil cat? It all comes alive in this epic musical adventure filled with wonderful music, lots of laughs and Pilkey’s beloved characters.
Kids will recognize their favorite treehouse from the books. The cast includes Brandon James Butorovich (Dog Man & Others), Mundo Ballejos (Harold & Others), Sadie Jayne Kennedy (Li’l Petey & Others), Marquise Neal (George), Jake Wernecke (Petey & Others) and Glory Yepassis-Zembrou (Flippy & Others).
Standouts include Butorovich who is hysterical as Dog Man as he first plays a human with voice and then a dog who only howls. Zembrou’s powerful vocals are a joy to behold. Kudos to Heigh Leigh Hanson for the adorable costumes
With book and lyrics by Kevin Del Aguila (two-time Emmy Award-winning writer of the PBS show Peg + Cat), and music by Brad Alexander, the show features original direction and choreography by Jen Wineman and excellent scenic design by Timothy R. Mackabee.
Laughter filled the theatre with the antics of the characters as well as Pilkey’s humorous situations. It’s an ideal show to expose children to the joys of live theatre productions. The running time is about 90 minutes with one intermission. Recommended for ages 5+.
