The Hollywood Bowl is an iconic symbol of Los Angeles. It’s a gathering place music and film lovers flock to each summer to enjoy the sounds of their favorite artists among the stars (the Hollywood ones and those above them in the open-air venue). One of the most sought after shows of the summer season is the Sound of Music Sing-A-Long. The Sound of Music, like the Hollywood Bowl is iconic in it’s own right. The film debuted in 1965, but nearly 60 years later, it continues to draw audiences of all of ages.
Costumed movie-goers and Sound of Music enthusiasts come together at the Hollywood Bowl each year for a festive sing-a-long. There a props to use throughout movie, and people cheering and hollering, all while singing the songs that this movie has made a part of history. The Sound of Music sing-a-long is hosted by actress Melissa Peterman who gathers costume wearers to the the famed Hollywood Bowl stage for a fantastic costume contest. Prior to the start of the movie, the crowd gets to hear about the creative costumes that fans dreamt up and vote for their favorites. This year’s winner, a group costume for Liesl’s First Champage – with lifesize props and and charm to match.
The Sound of Music stars legends Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. While the movie has always been wonderful, seeing it on a big screen, among thousands of other fans is just incredible. Bubbles blow among the crowd as Maria (Andrews) appears onscreen sining among the hills. As Captain von Trapp (Plummer) sings Edelweiss the whole crowd is lit with phones and it moves many people in the audience to tears. When the Captain and Maria finally find their fate, and seal it with a kiss, the crowd goes wild and confetti flies all around the Hollywood Bowl. The Sound of Music sing-a-long is a testament to the power of cinema, the inspiration of music and the magic of the Hollywood Bowl.
