Point Loma Playhouse presents the San Diego Premiere of “Clever Little Lies,” by two-time Tony winner Joe DiPieto. The kind of funny that makes you laugh out loud. Subject matter that in reality is anything but. However, if you can step back from situation and watch what’s happening in front of you This play is the shot of laughter you need for an evening of escapism. The funniest show I’ve see in a few month’s Who doesn’t love to laugh?

The playhouse founded in 2006, is located at the far end of Point Loma in the historic Pont Loma Assembly building on Talbot. The community theatre does only a couple plays a year, but also offers actors workshops, concerts, and other educational opportunities

Clever Little Lies offers us the worst and best sides of marriage. When Billy admits to his father after losing to him at tennis, he is in love with a woman not his wife the mayhem begins. Billy’s mom wheedles the information out of his dad and invites Billy and wife Jane over to set things right. Contemporary east coast setting. .Set mostly in parents home.

The cast’s chemistry made Jerry Pilato’s, director’s debut for the playhouse appear easy. While Billy’s affair is the play catalyst the real leading roles are the parents. My favorite Bill Sr. was played by Richard Rivera. He made me laugh. The perfect dad ad husband. Matched by the talent of his wife performed by Dori Solois, played off each other beautifully. William Parker Shore portrayed Billy. The villain of the piece. He depicted the cheating husband conflicted and set to throw in the towel with conviction. Melanie McCorkle rounded out the foursome that made this cast sing.

Jerry Pilato, was also the set designer for the show. A nice living room set, with a bar cart off to the side. I love these kinds of set. Stepping into someone else’s home like a fly on the wall.

A play of this sort also has it’s poignant moments. But basically it’s about finding your happy in the now. That doesn’t mean not to chase your dream – but appreciate what you have. Don’t let what you want be what defines you. What you have may lose it’s shine – but with a little polish and wisdom, a glimpse of what having what you think you want may not be as good as what you have.

The show is also about family. Sacrificing themselves to help someone else.

Come for the laugh, stay through the tear, learn what it takes for a marriage to last a lifetime.
